NORTHERN IRELAND PRISON SERVICE MEDAL

Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, presented the first Northern Ireland Prison Service Medals at a ceremony at Hillsborough Castle on the 19 September.

On 25 February 2002 the Secretary of State Dr John Reid announced the publication of the Royal Warrant for the Northern Ireland Prison Service Medal. Advertisements requesting applications for the Northern Ireland Prison Service Medal appeared the following day marked the official launch of the Medal.

The Medal recognises 'those who have rendered professional, committed and brave service as members of, and by others in support of, the Northern Ireland Prison Service.'

To date over 4144 applications have been issued to serving and former members of staff and around 3000 applications completed.
