Maghaberry Prison


Outdoor Activities Scheme

Prisoners nearing the end of their sentence and life sentence prisoners within three years of completing their tariff can participate in structured activities under the Outdoor Pursuits Scheme.  This is in keeping with the Prison Service ethos to thoroughly prepare prisoners for rehabilitation back into the community.

Those considered for participation in the Outdoor Activities Scheme must have completed a successful period of home leave, be security cleared by the relevant establishment security department and by a multi-disciplinary Risk Assessment Panel.

They must also be accompanied by staff.  The staff/prisoner ratio is determined by the Risk Assessment Panel and must be observed at all times.   

All ventures are organised and supervised by qualified physical education instructors.

These type of initiatives assist prisoners re-adapt to the outside environment and experience new recreational activities.
