Maghaberry Prison

Mourne House

Up until 21 June 2004 Mourne House, Maghaberry held all female offenders including female young offenders and immigration detainees. Female inmates (including female immigration detainees) were transferred from Mourne to Hydebank Wood and male immigration detainees to Maghaberry's facility in Belfast.

Mourne House now forms part of the Prison Service's emergency accommodation but will not routinely hold any prisoners

Mourne House was modelled on Cornton Vale women's prison in Scotland. The accommodation is in one two storey house. Each storey has three separate units of seven cells. A separate house accommodates a further 14 prisoners.

In total Mourne can hold 56 prisoners in single cells with integral sanitation. There is also a small hospital, classrooms for educational and vocational training purposes, a small vocational training workshop, a chapel, gym and exercise yard.

One of the Units in Mourne has been renamed Martin House and is now used to accommodate a small number of selected life sentenced prisoners.
