Maghaberry population tops previous high
The number of prisoners held in Maghaberry Prison this week stood at 883, the highest number since NIPS began using computerised records.
The previous highest figure was 877 which was first reached in September 22, 2008. The overall total prison population this week was 1526, a fall of two from the same period last year.
Prison Population Statistics published
The Northern Ireland Office this week published its Research and Statistical Bulletin 5/2009 entitled ‘The Northern Ireland Prison Population in 2008’.
The publication provides statistics on the size and composition of the prison population in Northern Ireland between 1999 and 2008.
Key Findings
• The overall annual average prison population in Northern Ireland increased by almost 2% from an average of 1,466 in 2007 to an average of 1,490 in 2008. The 2008 average remand population of 507 was a decrease of just over 3% on the 2007 level (525), whilst the average immediate custody population in 2008 was 955, 5% higher than in 2007 (909).
• The total number of receptions into prison increased by 2% from 6,061 in 2007 to 6,185 in 2008.
• The overall prison population was predominantly male (97% in 2008). Males also made up 94% of all receptions into prison during 2008.
• In 2008, 48% of the average immediate custody prison population were between the ages of 17 and 29, while 56% of all immediate custody prison receptions were between the ages of 17 and 29.
• In 2008, 68% of the immediate custody prisoner population were serving sentences for violent offences (violence against the person, sexual offences or robbery). Seven percent were serving sentences for drug offences and ‘other offences’.
• Prisoners with sentences of greater than one year but less than or equal to five years formed 33% of the immediate custody population in 2008; those sentenced to more than five years but less than life made up 31%; those with sentences of one year and under formed 18%. Life sentence prisoners made up 17% of the average immediate custody population in 2008.
• Northern Ireland had a rate of 88 prisoners per 100,000 population in 2008 compared to 153 in England & Wales and 152 in Scotland. The Republic of Ireland had a rate of 76 prisoners per 100,000 population. The USA had the highest rate of imprisonment in the world, 756 prisoners per 100,000 population, followed by the Russian Federation on 629.
