Notable incidents (and NIPS response)
Death of former Director General
A former Director General of the Northern Ireland Prison Service Robin Halward CB died on April 10 after a long period of illness.
Mr Halward was Director General from September 1998 to March 2002 and led the Service at a time of considerable change, including the closure of the Maze Prison.
NIPS Director Robin Masefield paid tribute to Mr Halward: “Robin came to us with unprecedented experience, particularly as the Governor of Strangeways Prison. He demonstrated from the beginning his strong understanding of the operational role and the contribution of individual officers.”
Mr Halward, who was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, joined the Prison Service in England and Wales in 1973 as an Assistant Governor. He held a number of posts, including Governor of Strangeways and Area manager for the Prison Service’s Mersey and Manchester area.
Having spent three and a half years at the helm of NIPS, he left to take up a new post in the Immigration and Nationality Directorate of the Home Office. He retired from the post in 2004 for reasons of ill health.
