MINISTER COMMENDS EFFORTS OF PRISON SERVICE AGAINST BACKDROP OF INCREASING PRISONER NUMBERS
The Prisons’ Minister Paul Goggins today congratulated the Northern Ireland Prison Service on their effective work with prisoners and their efforts to protect the public by reducing levels of re-offending. He was commenting as the Prison Service published its Annual Report and Accounts for 2006-07.

DEATH IN CUSTODY - Frazer Souter
The Northern Ireland Prison Service regrets to announce the death in custody of remand prisoner Mr Frazer Joel Souter. Mr Souter was pronounced dead in the healthcare unit of Maghaberry Prison at 06.45 am today. He was returned to the prison form an outside hospital yesterday afternoon.

“SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS AT ASH HOUSE” - MURRAY
The Northern Ireland Prison Service today responded to the publication of ‘The Prison Within’, a Human Rights Commission Report on the imprisonment of women at Hydebank Wood 2004-06. Max Murray, Head of Operations in the Prison Service, thanked the Commission and their researchers for their efforts in compiling the report and stated that some important issues had been identified.

BOOKS ON PRESCRIPTION AT MAGILLIGAN
Leading the way forward for the treatment of prisoners, Magilligan Prison has launched its first ever Book Prescription Scheme. The scheme, which is the first of its type in Northern Ireland, is endorsed by the Western Health and Social Care Trust, and has the support of health care professionals from across Northern Ireland.
