NORTHERN IRELAND PRISON SERVICE WEBSITE SPEAKS WITH BROWSEALOUD

 Date Created - Monday 31 March 08 @ 11:03

The Prison Service is responsible for providing prison services throughout Northern Ireland. It is a major component of the wider criminal justice system and contributes alongside other partners, to achieving the system's overall aims and objectives.
The recent incorporation of Browsealoud on the Northern Ireland Prison Service website is a move to improve the accessibility of web content to those who have literacy difficulties or find reading online content difficult.
Browsealoud, an innovative text-to-speech solution from Texthelp Systems, adds speech to websites, highlighting each word as it is spoken. This unique functionality improves reading comprehension for over 20% of the UK population with dyslexia, literacy difficulties and those with mild visual impairments.

Robin Masefield, for the Northern Ireland Prison Service said,
“We wanted to feature Browsealoud on our website to make it more readily accessible by all members of the general public.
“Browsealoud helps users who experience difficulty reading text for whatever reason. This can range from those who are partially sighted to those with literacy difficulties.”
Notes to Editors
1. Browsealoud software is free to download. Once users have downloaded the software they can go to any site that is speech enabled with Browsealoud and have the text read aloud.

2. Browsealoud already works with major clients across the UK. These include BT, British Airways, Permanent TSB, Churchills Insurance, British Council, Department of Health, Home Office, Victoria & Albert Museum, NHS among others.
