The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, Rev Dr John Finlay today spoke of his admiration of the work carried out by staff in Magilligan Prison to prepare inmates for release.

Dr Finlay, who was paying his first visit to a prison, told senior governors that the atmosphere between staff and prisoners was much more relaxed and positive than he had anticipated.

“On behalf of the Church and wider society I would like to say a big thank you for all you are doing. I’m genuinely very impressed. I appreciate you work in one of the more challenging areas of society and that you work for the betterment of society.

“It was fascinating to see the great work that is taking place here. It is very interesting and encouraging,” he added.

The Moderator was welcomed by Governor Tom Woods, who gave him an overview of the prison.

Dr Finlay, who was accompanied by Magilligan Presbyterian Chaplain, Rev George Simpson, visited a wing where new inmates are given a week long induction to familiarise themselves with the prison.

He also visited the recently opened Alpha Compound, where prisoners experience a more relaxed regime in preparation for being moved to Foyleview Resettlement Unit.

Next stop was the wood workshop, where he saw inmates busy at work, making new furniture for the prison estate.

Commenting on the visit, Governor Woods said: “I was very pleased to welcome Dr Finlay to the prison and I appreciate the support that he and others give to the pastoral work carried out by the prison chaplains.

“This is a key element of what Magilligan is all about and very much connects us to the wider community. I am glad he enjoyed his visit. It is a tribute to the hard work of our officers that they are able to create the relationships so vital to the rehabilitation process.”
